Formed in 2013 by friends Anton Falck and Joakim Wei Bernild, First Hate has always run counter to trends, fusing pop thrills, club poetics, and bad romance in chic confections of hedonism and heartbreak. Cotton Candy took shape patiently, with certain songs dating back as far as five years, while others were finished mere weeks before the vinyl went to print. The album coalesces around the quest of an escapist narrator stumbling through a broken world, winning and losing lovers, mood-swinging from extreme highs to hopeless lows. The title alludes to transience and ecstasy, the way sweetness can dissolve too easily into nothingness. Throughout, the productions embody these themes, glittering with synthetic detail and hypermodern finesse, effervescent but elusive.
