ABOUT TSOB:

The Sound of Belgium explores the rich but untold story of Belgian dance music. From the dance halls with Decap organs to the golden days of Popcorn; From EBM and New Beat to Belgian House and Techno.

A chronicle of unique popular music, The Sound of Belgium goes in search of the spirit of a nation and the people that danced to it.

At the end of the 80s, Belgium was taken by surprise by the New Beat, a once immensely popular, almost surreal type of dance music. Its unexpected but short lived success didn’t only leave a mark on a new generation of musicians in Belgium in the years to come; It’s eclectic mix of sounds and styles actually had its seeds in earlier decades.

Now is the time to tell the story that has been widely ignored by ‘serious’ music critics and the mainstream media in general. This is a documentary that goes in search of the spirit of a nation, by exploring the history of Belgian’s popular music and the people that danced to it.

I think I spent most of 2013 behind a bar listening to some amazing DJs  which left me a lot less time to sift through all the great stuff that came out this year but here’s some of my favorites in no particular order.

Flying Bodies 12″ (Gooiland Elektro)
Cute Heels 12″ (Gooiland Elektro)
V/A Club Funny Horse (Gooiland Elektro)

Gooiland Elektro seem to be always reading my mind, pretty much everything Martijn puts out is my new favorite thing. I had to include the Club Funny Horse comp even though I haven’t gotten my copy yet because my fishnet ass fully endorses it.

Gesaffelstein Pursuit 12″ (The Vinyl Factory)

So loved this track like a million times on the dance floor.

Inhalt – Occupations EP (Dark Entries)

Great dudes who made another great record as well as being some of my favorite DJs of the year

Die Selektion – Gottes Wille 7″ (aufnahme + wiedergabe)

Thanks to Caesar for hand delivering this one. Just love this band so much!!

Lebanon Hanover – Tomb for Two CS (Living Tapes)

Also one of my favorite shows of last year

Youth Code S/T LP (Dais)

These guys deserve ALL the love for how much hard work they put into this album. Anyone who hasn’t seen them live yet should do themselves a favor and catch them when they go on tour again.

DBC Pris LP (Dais)

Love the title track so much, also one of my favorite shows of 2013.

High Functioning Flesh S/T CS (self released)

Pretty sure we wore out our store copy in a few days. They also make the list for being great road trip buddies in 2013

Fractured, ecstatic & pummeling, NYC’s Ital has emerged in recent years as a powerful voice in the new American dance underground. His records & live sets are a headrush of sound that explores a uniquely personal territory verging on house & techno. He’s released on Planet Mu, Workshop, was 100% Silk’s debut artist, and recently collaborated with Hieroglyphic Being under the moniker Interplanetary Prophets.
